Chance

We feel the volt inside our veins,

inside the vines, inside the rain,

and through the capillaries of

a tree. We feel the pulse above

in storms, vibrato of thunder,

the whispering rhythms of a river,

magnetic currents in the earth,

the alternating flow of breath,

the push of tides, reversing air

from caves, dilating hum and dance

of bees, the chant of auctioneer.

All oscillate together, or

they seem to, in this play of chance,

beneath the stars’ indifference.

New Year

The snowy field is pure and blank,

a page unwritten on, intact,

intimidating with its white

unblemished possibility,

and promise of the fresh, unknown.

All limbs are finned by mounting snow,

and snow’s so deep the fence posts wear

tall dunce’s caps, for storms this big

are just a kind of carnival,

flakes drifting like confetti, trees

pristine in costumes, and the snow

like makeup smoothing ditch and rut,

the clutter swept beneath, the mud

and trash all whitewashed over

and broken things immaculate

in bandages. All wait the grime,

the wound, the signature of time.
